If you’ve been going to church for a while, you’ve probably seen or participated in Communion (sometimes called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist). But what is it exactly? We celebrate communion to remember the incredible sacrifice that Jesus made for us. Let’s talk about Communion!

Jesus said on many occasions in the Bible that He is the bread of life, and whoever figuratively “eats” His body (by believing in Him) will never hunger again but have eternal life. Food is necessary for life. If you don’t eat, you will eventually die. But, the life that food gives us is only temporary, the life that comes from belief in Jesus is eternal. When Jesus was celebrating the Passover (a Jewish feast) with His disciples, He took the bread and He said that it represented His body, which was broken for us, and He took the cup of wine and said that it represented his blood, which was poured out for us, and He told us to take the bread and the cup in remembrance of Him. Communion should not be taken lightly, it is an incredibly important reminder of what Jesus went through to save us from our sins.

Bible Verses:

  • Luke 22:19-20 | Jesus started communion so we will remember what He did for us.
  • John 6:35 | He called His body the “bread of life.”
  • 1 John 2:2 | The sacrifice of Jesus brings us eternal life.
  • 1 Corinthians 11:27-32 | Don’t come to communion with wrong hearts.
  • John 3:16-17 | Let’s remember His sacrifice and what it means for us.

Family Time Questions:

 Why is food important?

• How is believing in Jesus like eating food that will make you never hunger again?

What did Jesus mean when He said that we should “eat” his body?

• Why is it important to take communion seriously?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for sending your Son, Jesus, to save me from my sins. Help me to always remember your incredible sacrifice. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
