If you look up “Easter” in the dictionary, you’d probably find something like, “Easter is the celebration where Christians remember the resurrection of Jesus.” And that’s exactly what Easter is. But what does the name mean? That is, where does the name Easter come from? The name “Easter” comes from “Eostre Monath” which was an Old English name for the month of April. The English pagans named the month after a false goddess of theirs, Eostre. Because the name “Easter” comes from the name of a month that was named after a goddess, some Christians choose to use the name “Resurrection Sunday” (or something similar) instead of calling it Easter. This is fine, but the name of the celebration isn’t as important as what we’re celebrating in the first place. The name, “Douglas” means “black stream.” But that’s not what Douglas is. Douglas is that green guy with crazy red hair who likes to tell people about Jesus. And, no matter what you call it, Eostre has nothing to do with Easter. Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He is risen!

Bible Verses:

  • Ephesians 5:2 | Jesus sacrificed Himself.
  • Romans 5:8 | He died for our sins.
  • 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 | Three days later Jesus rose again.
  • Romans 6:4 | He conquered sin & death for us.
  • John 3:16-17 | We share His victory by believing in Him.

Family Time Questions:

  • Do you know what your name means?
  • Where does the name Easter come from?
  • Do we celebrate Eostre on Easter?
  • What is Easter?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for saving us from our sins. Help us to never forget what you have done for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
