There are many passages where the Bible (especially in Matthew) makes reference to a place where there will be “weeping and gnashing of teeth.” This place is referred to as “the outer darkness” and it is contrasted with a “feast.” Jesus warns his people that, if we are not ready for the feast, we will be cast into the outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing teeth. Unlike eternal life, which comes from simply believing in Jesus Christ, it seems as though our actions here on earth determine whether we get to go to the feast or are cast into the outer darkness. We should get ready for Jesus’ return by living for Him here and now so that we aren’t left out!

Bible Verses:

  • Matthew 8:10-12 – The Faith of the Centurion
  • Matthew 13:41-42 – The Parable of the Weeds Explained
  • Matthew 22:11-13 – The Parable of the Marriage Feast
  • Matthew 24:48-51 – The Wicked Servant
  • Matthew 25:30 – The Parable of the Talents
  • Luke 13:28 – Enter Through the Narrow Gate

Family Time Questions:

  • What must you do to have eternal life?
  • What must you do to get into the “feast” described in these passages?
  • How does the Bible describe where you go if you get left out of the “feast”?
  • How should we prepare for Jesus’ return?

Prayer:

“Dear God, thank you that you are coming soon. Please help us to learn what you have to say about the end times and to be ready in the ways that you want us to be ready. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
