A very long time ago, all people had one language. They gathered together and decided to make a name for themselves by building a city with a tower that would reach all the way to heaven. When God saw what they were about to do, He confused their language (the Hebrew word for “confused” sounds like Babel) so that they would have to stop working on the tower and spread out over the whole earth instead. Even this very short story has a lot to teach us: We should never try to lift ourselves up above God, we should always do what God tells us to do, and we shouldn’t assume that all progress is good. There is so much to learn from the true story of the Tower of Babel.
Bible Verses:
- Genesis 11:1-9 – The Tower of Babel
Family Time Questions:
- Is “progress” always good? Is it always bad?
- Why do you think God decided to confuse the language of all the people at the tower of Babel?
- What are some things that we can learn from the mistakes of the people in this story?
Prayer:
“Dear God, thank You for Your patience with us. Please help us to learn from our mistakes and the mistakes of others, too. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
