“The First Noel” is a great Christmas hymn, but it has a lot of words that are hard to understand. Join Douglas as he explains some of the trickier words of this classic song and what they mean.

You’ll have to watch the video to see all of Douglas’ explanations, but here are a few of the difficult words and phrases in this song:

• Noel – Noel has a lot of meanings. It can mean Christmas songs, Christmas time, or good news. In this song, it’s referring to the Good News of Jesus’ birth!

• “drew nigh” – Came close

• “Full reverently upon the knee” – “Reverently” means in a respectful way (especially when it comes to respecting God) and “Full reverently” means totally respectful. “Upon the knee” means that they got down on their knees and kneeled before Jesus.

This song helps us to praise God for sending us His Son, Jesus. And understanding the words helps us to praise Him even better!

“The First Noel” Bible Verses:

  • Luke 2:8-10 | The Shepherds heard the good news from the angel.
  • Luke 2:11 | The news was that the promised Christ had come.
  • Micah 5:2 | The Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem.
  • Matthew 2:1-2 | Wise men were seeking the newborn King.
  • Matthew 2:9 | A special star rested over Jesus’ birthplace.
  • Matthew 2:11 | The wise men gave baby Jesus precious gifts.

“The First Noel” Family Time Questions:

• What is this song about?

• Did you learn any new words from this song? If so, what were they?

• Why is the birth of Jesus such Good News?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for the Gift of your Son, Jesus. Help me to share the Good News of Jesus’ birth this Christmas. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
