New Year’s is a great time for thinking about making a positive change in your life. The thing is, many people try to change all on their own, which is pretty much impossible without God. Jesus said that He is the vine and we are the branches. Apart from Him, we can do nothing. Whether or not we will walk with God is a choice that we continually make all the time. And if we abide in Him (that is, stay near Him by spending time with Him in prayer, Bible reading, and choosing to live His way) we can and will see genuine, positive change in our lives in ways we never thought possible. Choose to follow Jesus in this new year.

Bible Verses:

  • John 15:5 – Jesus the Vine
  • Philippians 4:13 – Strength in Christ
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 – A New Creation
  • Galatians 5:22-23 – Fruit of the Spirit
  • James 4:8 – Draw Near to God

Family Time Questions:

  • What does Jesus mean when He says He is the vine and we are the branches?
  • Why is it hard to make positive changes on our own?
  • How can staying close to Jesus help us change for the better?
  • What are some ways we can draw near to God this year?
  • In what way are we a new creation by simply believing in Jesus?

Prayer:

“Dear God, as we start this new year, help us to remember that true change comes from abiding in You. And please help us to stay connected to You through prayer, reading the Bible, and living your way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
