It’s becoming harder and harder to be a Christian these days, but that shouldn’t surprise us. The Bible says that anyone who wants to follow Jesus will face persecution. So, let’s talk about how God wants us to respond when people treat us badly because of our faith.

Obviously, no one wants to be treated badly; we all want people to like us and to treat us with kindness and respect. For most of us, our reaction to being mistreated is to get angry or to try to “get even,” but the Bible says that we should actually rejoice when we are persecuted for our faith. God will richly bless those who suffer for His name’s sake. It’s a lot easier for us here on earth when we live in a place that’s pretty supportive of Christianity, and we all want to be comfortable. We need to remember that earthly suffering is temporary, but the rewards that come from suffering for Jesus Christ are eternal, and eternity is a LOOOONG time! Let’s stand up for our faith, no matter the cost, and share the love of Jesus Christ with the world.

Bible Verses:

  • James 1:19-20 | Anger is not the right response to persecution
  • Romans 12:19 | Leave reckoning to God.
  • 2 Timothy 3:12 | All who follow Jesus will be persecuted.
  • Matthew 5:11-12 | Rejoice in persecution for Jesus’ sake.
  • John 15:19 | The world is not our home.
  • James 1:12 | Jesus has rewards for those who suffer.

Family Time Questions:

What are some ways that Christians are persecuted around the world?

• How should we respond when we are persecuted?

• Why is it worth it to be persecuted for the sake of Jesus Christ?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for loving me. Thank you for preparing a place for me in heaven. Help me to stand up for my faith in you, even when it’s hard. And please comfort those who are literally laying down their lives for the sake of the gospel. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
