Juneteenth is a day when we celebrate the freeing of the slaves in America. It’s an important (though not very well-known) holiday that confirms the Biblical truth that we are all one people. And it shines a light on the horrible things that always happen when we start treating people like they are “less than.” We are all different in so many beautiful ways, but we all stand before God as equals, as one people, all in need of a Savior.

People are always putting themselves and others into categories: Black or white, good or bad, rich or poor, etc… And it’s not that we should pretend that these differences don’t exist, but we should remember that we are all in this together. We are all made in the image of God, and He loves us all very much. It’s a very natural thing to surround yourself with people who look like you, talk like you, or are from the same part of town as you. But, just because it’s natural, that doesn’t mean that it’s good! As Christians, we should set the standard for brotherly love and unity.

Bible Verses:

  • Romans 10:12 | On the inside, everyone’s the same.
  • Acts 10:34-35 | God treats everyone the same.
  • Galatians 3:28 | Believers are all one in Jesus.
  • John 3:16 | We are all deeply loved by God.
  • Matthew 5:43-48 | God wants us to show love to others, even our enemies!
  • John 13:34-35 | We are to show we’re His disciples by our loving words and actions.

Family Time Questions:

What are some ways that we are all different?

• What are some ways that we are all the same?

• Why is Juneteenth an important holiday?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for loving me. Please help me to share your love with others, including those who aren’t just like me. Help us as Christians to show the world what brotherly love really looks like. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
