It can be very hard to obey our parents sometimes, especially when they tell us not to do something that we want to do. But, whether we realize it or not, our parents have our best interests in mind. They love us and they know what’s best for us, and it’s the same way with God!

Many of the rules found in the Bible don’t sound like a lot of fun. Things like, don’t lie, love your neighbor, and forgive one another are all really hard to do. But God didn’t make these rules to ruin our fun or to make things difficult for us, He made these rules (and more) because He loves us and He knows what’s best for us. Douglas’ mom didn’t say “no more cookies” because she doesn’t what Douglas to have good things, she said that because she knew what would happen if Douglas ate too many cookies. Our parents, teachers, and other adults in our lives that set rules for us, set those rules because they know what’s best. And God knows best of all. So next time you feel like disobeying the rules that God or your parents set for you, and you want to do things your own way, just remember that they love you, and they really do know what’s best.

Obedience Bible Verses:

  • Ephesians 6:1-3 | “the first commandment with a promise”
  • Colossians 3:20 | Obeying Your Parents Pleases God
  • Luke 11:28 | “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
  • James 1:25 | “…they will be blessed in what they do.”

Obedience Family Time Questions:

  • What are some rules in the Bible that you find hard to follow?
  • Which rules in your home or classroom are hard to follow?
  • Why should we obey God and our parents and teachers?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for loving me. Help me to remember that you know and want what’s best. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
