“O Little Town of Bethlehem” is a great Christmas carol, but it can be a little hard to understand. You’ll have to watch the video to see all of Douglas’ explanations, but here are just a few of the difficult words and phrases in this song and what they mean:

  • “Thee” and “thy” – “You” and “your”
  • “how still we see thee lie!” – Not, “lie” as in an untruth, but “lie” as in, to lie down. In this line it’s like we’re saying to Bethlehem, “we see you sleeping so peacefully”
  • Proclaim – To announce
  • Impart – To give or make known
  • Tidings – News
  • Immanuel – A name that means, “God with us.” That’s exactly who Jesus is!

This song helps us to remember what’s most important this Christmas season; the birth of our Savior, Jesus. Let’s praise Him!
