What does “Maundy Thursday” mean? Many people think (like I used to!) that it’s “Monday Thursday” but that doesn’t really make sense. Maundy comes from the Latin word, “Mandatum” which means, “Command.” On Maundy Thursday we remember how Jesus gave us a new commandment to love one another!

Maundy Thursday happens during what many Christians call, Holy Week, which starts on Palm Sunday (where we remember how Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey) and ends on Easter Sunday (or, Resurrection Sunday). On the Thursday of Holy Week, while Jesus was celebrating Passover with His disciples, He washed their feet to show them what real love and service looked like. And He gave the disciples (and us!) a new commandment, to love one another as Christ had loved them. Also, during the feast, Jesus broke the bread and said that it was His body, which was broken for them, and the wine was His blood, which was poured out for them. And that’s why we celebrate communion, or, the Lord’s Supper, to remember Jesus’ sacrifice for us. On Maundy Thursday we remember the new commandment that Jesus gave His disciples to love one another and we remember how Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper.

Maundy Thursday Bible Verses:

  • Matthew 21:6-11 | Jesus rode into Jerusalem on what we call Palm Sunday.
  • Matthew 26:26-29 | Jesus gave us the Lord’s Supper.
  • John 13:3-12 | He washed His disciples’ feet.
  • John 13:34 | Jesus gave us a new command (mandatum).
  • Mark 10:42-45 | Jesus taught us to serve others in love.

Maundy Thursday Family Time Questions:

• What do we celebrate on Maundy Thursday?

• Where does the “Maundy” in Maundy Thursday come from?

• How can you show love to others like Jesus showed love to His disciples?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for the incredible example of love that you set for us. Please help me to love others as you love me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
