One day, Douglas was going to be late for class, and his teacher is really strict about tardiness. He was running to class when he saw another kid drop his books. Instead of helping, he decided to run past him to make sure he wasn’t late. Douglas made it to class just in time, but the classmate he saw drop his books came in right after the bell rang, and got in trouble with the teacher. It wasn’t like Douglas hated that kid—he just decided to not help him. Was that good enough?

Sometimes it feels like Christianity is all about not doing bad things, and that’s important, but it’s just a small part of what God has called us to. If life was all about not doing bad things, then the holiest thing in the world would be a rock. Rocks don’t do anything, they just sit there. They can’t do anything wrong if they don’t do anything at all! But God called us to more than that. He wants us to love Him and love our neighbors. Love is an active thing, it’s not just a feeling. Instead of saying “I hope someone helps that person” show them God’s love and help them yourself! Love your neighbor as yourself.

“Loving Your Neighbor” Bible Verses:

  • Matthew 22:36-40 | The two greatest commandments
  • Luke 10:25-37 | The Good Samaritan
  • James 2:14-17 | Faith and deeds
  • Romans 14:5 | Pure and faultless religion

“Loving Your Neighbor” Family Time Questions:

  • What are the two greatest commandments?
  • What are some ways we can love God?
  • What are some ways that we can love our neighbors?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for always loving me. Help me to love you in return and to love my neighbor as myself. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
