You’ll hear all kinds of people telling you to “listen to your heart” but that’s terrible advice! Can you think of a single villain in a movie or book who didn’t listen to their heart? Our hearts can lie to us, our hearts can make mistakes, and our hearts are desperately selfish. Instead of seeking your own way and listening to your heart, you should listen to Jesus! He loves you, He knows what’s best for you, and He never makes mistakes.

This message, that we should listen to our hearts, is all over the place: it’s in movies, books, TV shows, just about everywhere! And it can sometimes sound a little different. “Find your own truth, get in touch with yourself”, “do what makes you happy”, “do whatever feels right to you”, “You’ve got to find your own way”, “follow your dreams”, these are pretty much saying the same thing, and it’s wrong. One thing that people also often say along with this is that no one knows you like you know you. And that’s simply not true! God knows you way better than you know yourself and He loves you even more than you love yourself. Don’t listen to your heart, listen to God.

“Love Is Not Self-Seeking” Bible Verses:

  • 1 Corinthians 13:5 | Love is not self-seeking.
  • Jeremiah 17:9 | Our hearts are deceitful.
  • 1 John 1:8 | We lie to ourselves.
  • John 14:15 | Obey and follow God.
  • Galatians 4:6 | God’s Spirit lives within us.
  • John 14:26 | The Holy Spirit guides us.
  • 2 Timothy 3:16 | Read your Bible for good direction.

“Love Is Not Self-Seeking” Family Time Questions:

• Can you think of an example of a villain who listened to their heart?

• Why can’t we trust our hearts?

• What should we listen to instead?

• What’s a way that we can tell if something is from God or our own hearts?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for loving me. Please help me to do my best to always listen to you and not my own heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
