The Bible says that we should let our “light shine.” But we’re not supposed to actually light up like a lightning bug, our words and our actions should shine like a light in this dark world. One of the best ways that we can let our light shine is by telling people about Jesus!

One of Douglas’ favorite songs in Sunday School is “This Little Light of Mine,” but he didn’t actually understand what it meant. He asked his Children’s Pastor, Pastor Trent, how he was supposed to let his light shine since he wasn’t a lightning bug, “How can I let my light shine if I’ve got no glowy thing?!” Pastor Trent told him that the Bible isn’t talking about an actual light, but that our actions can shine like a light in this dark world. It’s a metaphorical light. Many people in this world are walking in darkness, not knowing the love of Jesus, but since we have the light of Christ within us, we can shine by showing the love of Jesus through our words and actions. So let’s all show the world Christ’s love, and let our little lights shine!

“Letting Your Light Shine” Bible Verses:

  • Matthew 5:14-16 | Let Your Light Shine
  • John 8:12 | Jesus is the Light
  • Ephesians 5:8 | “Live as children of light”
  • 1 Peter 2:9 | You Were Called Out of Darkness

Letting Your Light Shine” Family Time Questions:

  • What does it mean to shine your light?
  • What are some examples of how you can shine a light in this dark world?
  • Why is it so important to tell people about Jesus?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for your love for me. Please help me to shine your light in this dark world with my words and actions. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
