Lent is a church tradition where Christians will fast for 40 days leading up to Easter. It’s a time when we remember when Jesus fasted in the desert for 40 days in preparation for His ministry. Fasting for Lent (sometimes called a “Lenten Sacrifice”) can look like a lot of different things. Some will fast from food, but you can also fast from other things like TV or social media. Fasting helps us to practice healthy self-denial and it’s a great way to focus on what’s most important.

Bible Verses:

  • Matthew 4:4 | Man does not live by bread alone
  • Ephesians 1:7 | We need God more than anything
  • Luke 4:2 | Jesus fasted
  • Joel 1:14 | Old Testament Jews fasted
  • Acts 13:2-3 | New Testament believers fasted

Family Time Questions:

  • What are we remembering when we fast for Lent?
  • What are some things you could fast from?
  • What’s a good way to start small when fasting?
  • If you are a kid, who should you always talk to before fasting?

Prayer:

“Dear God, please help us to practice healthy self-denial and to take time to really focus on what’s most important. Thank you for the wonderful example that you set for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
