“Joy to the World” is a great Christmas carol, but it can be a little hard to understand. You’ll have to watch the video to see all of Douglas’ explanations, but here are just a few of the difficult words and phrases in this song:

  • “Let earth receive her King” – The earth isn’t alive, so calling the earth a “her” is just a figure of speech. This is just saying, “Let everyone on earth get ready for the King! (The King is Jesus!)”
  • Reign – Not “rain” like water coming from the sky but “reign” which means to rule in a kingly way
  • “Let men their songs employ” – Here “men” means all people, and employ usually means to hire, but here it just means to use. The song is saying, “Let everyone sing their songs of praise!”
  • “Far as the curse is found” – “The curse” is sin, and sin ruins everything. Every bad thing is a result of sin.

This song helps us to praise God for sending us His Son, Jesus. And understanding the words helps us to praise Him even better!
