Douglas’ grandma let him borrow a little stuffed sheep so he could help explain to kids how we are kind of like sheep, and Jesus is our Good Shepherd. The Bible has a lot to say about sheep and shepherds. Jesus is described as the Lamb of God, the shepherds were the first people to tell everyone of Jesus’ birth, King David was a shepherd, and much more; but today we’ll talk about how God is like our Shepherd. Sheep are useful, but they need a shepherd to survive. They follow their herd even if it’s going in a bad direction, they’re not especially intelligent, and they can’t do much to defend themselves. A shepherd shows his sheep where it’s safe to eat or drink, he protects them from predators, and he finds little sheep that have wandered off and gotten lost. And just as a shepherd takes care of his sheep, God takes care of us. He shows us where we should go and how we should live; He protects us from our enemy, the devil, like a shepherd protects his sheep from lions; and He’s always out looking for His lost lambs. Let’s be good sheep, and listen to our Good Shepherd.

“Good Shepherd” Bible Verses:

  • Psalm 23 | The Lord is my shepherd
  • Matthew 18:10-14 | 99 sheep
  • John 10:1-18 | The Good Shepherd
  • 1 Peter 2:25 | Like sheep gone astray

Good Shepherd” Family Time Questions:

Why do sheep need a shepherd?

How are we like sheep?

How is Jesus like a shepherd?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for being my Good Shepherd. Please help me to always follow close to you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
