There are some pretty difficult passages in the Bible. One of those difficult passages is the story of Jephthah and his daughter. It’s a hard story because it’s incredibly tragic, but it can also be confusing. After reading another difficult passage (one that might seem pretty boring) Douglas’ learned that Jephthah’s sad story shows us what can happen when we don’t know what God says in Scripture. One of the most important ways God talks to us is through the Bible. We need to learn what He says. We need to read our Bibles.

Bible Verses:

  • Judges 11:29-40 | The story of Jephthah’s foolish vow.
  • Genesis 22:1-14 | Abraham’s story of faithfulness.
  • Leviticus 5:4-13 | God’s instructions for a hasty vow.
  • Jeremiah 19:4-5 | God says to NOT do what Jephthah did!
  • 2 Timothy 3:16 | We should all study to know God’s Word.

Family Time Questions:

• What’s one of the most important ways that God talks to us?

• Why is it so important to know what the Bible says?

• What would have happened in the story of Jephthah if he had known God’s Word?

• Will there ever be a time when there’s nothing more you can learn from the Bible?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for speaking to us through the Bible. Please help me to learn what you say in Scripture and live according to your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
