There are basically two kinds of jealousy, being jealous OF something or someone (wanting what belongs to someone else) and being jealous FOR something or someone (being possessive of what is yours). Instead of being covetous and selfish, God wants us to be thankful and generous with what’s ours. Jealousy is usually a sin, but did you know that there is a good kind of selfishness? The Bible even says that God is jealous! Just like a husband should not be “generous” and let some other guy kiss his wife, God is jealous for our good. He wants what’s best for us and He knows that He is what’s best for us. Jealousy is often wrong, but Godly jealousy is a very good thing!

Bible Verses:

  • Exodus 20:17 | Don’t covet what others have.
  • James 3:16 | Jealousy leads to disorder.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:18 | Be thankful in all circumstances.
  • 2 Corinthians 9:6 | Be generous, reap generously.
  • Exodus 34:14 | God is a jealous God.
  • Proverbs 27:4 | The power of jealousy in relationships.
  • Matthew 19:6 | Marriage is an exclusive bond.

Family Time Questions:

  • What does it mean to be jealous OF something or someone?
  • What does it mean to be jealous FOR something or someone?
  • What does it mean that God is jealous for us?
  • When is it a good thing to be jealous?

Prayer:

Dear God, help me to be content with what I have and not to be jealous of others. Teach me to be generous and kind, just like you are. And thank you for being a jealous God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
