Should Christians believe in luck? What is luck exactly? Is it even real? On St. Patrick’s Day, you hear a lot about luck. Shamrocks and the color green are supposedly lucky, and breaking mirrors and walking under ladders is supposedly unlucky. But what does the Bible say about that?
When something “lucky” or “unlucky” happens, it means that something that was not very likely to happen happened. And it’s fine to acknowledge when crazy unlikely things happen, but the fact is that luck is not actually real. Nothing happens without God’s say-so. If something good happens to you, you weren’t lucky, you were blessed! And if something bad happens, it might be because of natural consequences, or it could be that God wants to teach you something, but either way, even bad things work together for the good of those who love Jesus. Trying to be “luckier” isn’t great, instead, just follow God and let Him sort out the rest!

“Is Luck Real?” Bible Verses:

  • Proverbs 16:33 | We can throw the dice, but God decides the outcome.
  • Proverbs 12:11 | Hard work brings good results.
  • James 1:17 | Every good and perfect gift comes from the Lord.
  • Romans 8:28 | God works all things together for good for those who love Him.
  • Revelation 21:3-4 | God will make all things new and right every wrong.

“Is Luck Real?” Family Time Questions:

If something really good happens to you, were you lucky? If not what were you?

What are some reasons that bad things might happen to you?

Why do we need to be careful about believing in luck?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you so much for the many blessings in my life. Help me to recognize all that you do for me every day. Thank you for your amazing plans for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
