As Christians, we’re supposed to be in the world but not of the world. That means not just hiding in church but actually going out and meeting and talking to non-Christians. If we don’t show them the love of Jesus, who will? If you go out into the world, you will probably see and hear things you’d rather not see or hear. And that’s hard. But the world desperately needs Jesus, and it’s up to us to shine his light in this dark world, not just hide our light in church. And whatever trouble we face out in the world will be worth it if it means bringing more people with us to heaven. In order to tell the world about Jesus, we need to be in the world.

Bible Verses:

  • Matthew 5:16 | Shine your light in the world.
  • Matthew 28:19-20 | Go and make disciples.
  • 1 Corinthians 5:9-10 | You can’t avoid sinners. (Note: You may want to read this verse first before reading it with your kids.)
  • Luke 5:27-32 | Jesus spent time with sinners.
  • John 17:15 | God’s protection in the world.
  • Romans 12:2 | Do not conform to the pattern of this world.

Family Time Questions:

  • Can you think of a time when you had to interact with someone who believes or acts differently than you? How did you handle it?
  • How can we shine our light for Jesus even when we are around people who don’t follow Him?
  • Why do you think it’s important for us to go out into the world instead of just staying in church?
  • How can we stay true to our beliefs and values when we’re in situations that might challenge them?

Prayer:

“Dear God, thank you for your love for me and for everyone. Please give me the courage to share your love and truth with others, even in difficult situations. Help me to love and show kindness to everyone I meet, while standing firm in my faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
