There may be one or more sins in your life that are disguising themselves as the virtue of humility. Humility is being humble, and to be humble means not thinking too highly of yourself. Sometimes we end up trying so hard to be humble (and making sure that other people notice how humble we are) that we end up doing the exact opposite and fall into sinful pride. “Hey everyone! come see how humble I am!” is no way to be humble. Another problem that can feel like humility (but is totally wrong!) is self-hatred. People often act like they need to hate themselves for what they have done; like God will only forgive them if they hate themselves. But that is not how it works! God hates sin, but He loves you. And the penalty for your sin is not self-hatred, the real penalty for your sin was paid by Jesus Christ when He died for you. Real humility is neither pride nor self-hatred, it is simply understanding that you are no better than anyone else, and appreciating God’s grace and love in your life.

Bible Verses About Humility:

  • James 4:6 | God wants us to be humble.
  • Luke 14:11 | We should not think too highly of ourselves.
  • 1 Peter 2:24 | Jesus took our punishment.
  • Mark 12:31 | Love others as you love yourself.
  • John 3:16 | God loves us and others. Always.

Family Time Questions About Humility:

• What does it mean to be humble?

• What are some sins that disguise themselves as humility?

• Who are we in relation to God?

• Who are we in relation to other people?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for loving me. Help me to be humble and to see myself the way that you see me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
