Douglas is free! His parents just got back from going out on a date, and they hired a neighbor high school girl named Becky to babysit Douglas and his brother. And she was the worst! She didn’t let Douglas or his brother do ANYTHING fun, they just had to sit around doing nothing for several hours. Douglas used to complain about how strict his parents were, but now he realized just how good he had it! In America, on the fourth of July, we celebrate Independence Day, which is the day we celebrate becoming a free country, it’s a day to celebrate our freedom. But we often don’t appreciate the freedom that we have, especially the freedom that we have in Jesus Christ. If you are a Christian, then Jesus has set you free from being a slave to sin. Douglas and his brother were sort of Becky’s “slaves,” they had to do whatever she told them to do, and she was not very nice about it. And before giving our lives to Jesus, we are all slaves to sin. But Jesus came to give us freedom from sin so that we could have the life with Him that He always intended for us. Let’s all make sure to remember the awesome freedom that we have in Christ!

“Freedom in Christ” Bible Verses:

  • John 8:36 | Free Indeed
  • Galatians 5:1 | “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”
  • Acts 13:38-39 | Freedom Through Christ, Not The Law
  • Romans 6:20-23 | Once Slaves to Sin
  • 1 Peter 2:16 | “…do not use your freedom as a cover-up of evil;”

“Freedom in Christ” Family Time Questions:

• Why is freedom so important?

• God wants us to be free, but what are some rules He still wants us to follow?

• What does it mean to be a slave to sin?

• When did Jesus do to set us free?

• What do we need to do in order to have freedom in Christ?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for saving me from my sins. Please help me to always be grateful for the freedom you’ve given me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
