Douglas loves to go camping. One time while camping with his dad and their scout troop, it was raining really hard. When Douglas staked his tent into the ground, the stakes just squished into the mushy mud. As he tried to sleep that night, all soggy, tucked into his sleeping bag, he heard a sound: POP! Then he heard that same popping sound several more times. As soon as he realized it was the tent stakes pulling out of the ground, his tent fell on him and he was trapped. After rolling around inside the tent in a panic, he finally made it out. But before long, the sounds of rain were accompanied by the sound of a tornado siren. His scout troop quickly grabbed their sleeping bags and went to the nearest tornado shelter to ride out the storm. The shelter was safe, because it was built on a firm foundation, but the tents were not, because they were staked in the mud.

In life, there are many “storms” that come our way, and we need to build our life on the Rock, on Jesus Christ. If the most important thing in your life is your family, or your friends, or school, or sports, or anything other than Jesus, then when trouble comes, you’ll be like the man who built his house on the sand. When the rains came, his house was washed away. Let’s build our lives on the firm foundation of Jesus, the Cornerstone, so that we’ll be able to stand strong when troubles come.

“The Firm Foundation” Bible Verses:

  • Matthew 7:24-27 | The wise man builds his house upon the Rock
  • Isaiah 28:16 | A stone in Zion
  • Psalm 62:2 | My rock and my salvation
  • 1 Corinthians 3:11 | No other foundation
  • 2 Timothy 2:19 | God’s solid foundation stands firm

The Firm Foundation” Family Time Questions:

What are some things that people build their lives on, besides Jesus?

Why is it so important to build your life on Jesus?

What does it look like to build your life on the Firm Foundation?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for being my Firm Foundation. Please help me to always build my life on you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
