There are SO MANY different excuses we make to get out of doing what we don’t want to do. And we end up feeling like a “really good person” if we have good enough excuses to not do what God wants us to do. But, the truth is, there is no excuse for not doing what God has called you to do. The good samaritan had every reason not to help the Israelite he found beaten on the side of the road. But, instead of making excuses like, “This Israelite hates me, so I should just leave him alone”, he decided to be a good neighbor and help. Instead of looking for excuses as to why you can’t do what God has called you to do (like, loving your neighbor), just do it! Don’t make excuses.

Bible Verses:

  • Luke 10:25-37 | The Parable of the Good Samaritan.
  • James 4:17 | If we know the good we should do and don’t do it, it’s sin.
  • Galatians 6:10 | We should do good to all people.
  • Proverbs 3:27-28 | Do not withhold good from those who deserve it.
  • 1 John 3:17-18 | Don’t just love with your words.

Family Time Questions:

  • Why do you think the first two people in the parable passed by the injured man without helping?
  • What are some excuses you’ve heard or used when you didn’t want to do something?
  • How can we remind ourselves to act in love even when it’s hard?
  • What does it mean to be a good neighbor? Can you think of any examples?

Prayer:

“Dear God, help us to be kind and compassionate, just like the Good Samaritan. And please help us to not make excuses and instead give us the courage to do what’s right. We want to show the world Your love through our words and actions. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
