There are so many people trying to tell us that we should listen to our hearts. They might say things like, “trust your instincts”, “follow your heart”, “let your conscience guide you”, “only you know what’s best for you”, etc. We hear these messages in movies, songs, books; all over the place! But it is very important for us as Christians to understand that this is not how God wants us to live. Not because God doesn’t want us to be happy – quite the opposite! Our hearts are deeply selfish and can be incredibly foolish. Your heart doesn’t know what’s best for you; God does. So don’t trust your heart; trust God. He loves you, and He knows what will actually bring you what you really want. Listen to God; don’t listen to your heart.
Bible Verses:
- Jeremiah 17:9-10 – The heart is deceitful
- Proverbs 28:26 – Don’t trust your heart
- Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord
- Ezekiel 36:26-27 – God can change your heart
Family Time Questions:
- Why do you think people say to “listen to your heart”?
- Why is that a bad idea?
- What should we do instead?
- Why should we listen to God?
Prayer:
“Dear God, thank You for Your incredible love for us. Please help us not to listen to our hearts but to follow You instead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
