Even if it’s God’s plan to provide us with more than what we have now, we should still be grateful for what He has already given us.

Douglas has heard many people say, “The Lord provides.” Which is good, because Douglas really “needs” Him to provide a new backpack! Everyone else got a new backpack for school but Douglas’ backpack is really old and the edges are starting to fray and he wrote his name on it in sharpie before he really knew how to write so the “S” is backwards. He really wanted a new backpack. But as he was thinking about how he “needed” a new backpack he felt a little selfish. Douglas’ backpack still holds his books just fine, and he used to love it. It’s a very good thing to remember that “The Lord will provide” but it’s also important to remember that the Lord DOES provide. God may give Douglas a new backpack someday (maybe even very soon) but it’s important for Douglas to be content with what God has already given him. God wants us to be content with what we have as we enjoy his plan for our lives right now as we also look forward to the plan He has for our future.

“Contentment” Bible Verses:

  • Matthew 6:25-34 | Don’t worry, be happy
  • Luke 12:15 | “Be on your guard against all kinds of greed;”
  • Jeremiah 29:11 | God has a great plan for you
  • Philippians 4:11-13 | Jesus can help us be content
  • Hebrews 13:5 | “Keep your lives free from the love of money”

“Contentment” Family Time Questions:

• What’s something that you really wish you had?

• What’s the difference between wanting something and needing something?

• What’s the difference between saying “The Lord WILL provide” and “the Lord DOES provide”?

• Why is it important to be content with what we already have?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for your many blessing in my life. Please help me to always be content with what you have given me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
