It doesn’t matter what your life looks like so much as what it’s built on. The parable of the wise and foolish builders is often portrayed as the wise builder (representing those who hear Jesus’ words and obey them) building his strong, beautiful house on a rock and the foolish builder (representing those who do not obey Jesus’ words) building his flimsy, shabby house on the sand. The foolish man’s house falls when the rains come but the wise man’s house stands strong. But the point of this parable that Jesus told has nothing to do with what the houses look like or what they’re built with (it doesn’t actually say anything about what they look like) and everything to do with what (or, rather, who) they’re built on! You can have what looks like a strong, beautiful life, but, if it’s not built on Jesus Christ, it will come crashing down when the storms of life roll in. Build your life on the Rock (by learning from and obeying Jesus Christ) so that when the storms of life come, you will stand strong!

Bible Verses:

  • John 16:33 | In this life there will be trouble and hard times.
  • Luke 6:47-48 | The wise man builds on the Rock.
  • Luke 6:49 | The foolish man builds on the sand.
  • 2 Corinthians 11:23-28 | Paul tells of his hardships.
  • Phil 1:12-18 | Paul responds to his suffering with joy!
  • 1 Corinthians 3:11 | A life well lived is built on Jesus!

Family Time Questions:

  • • How do you build your life on the Rock?
  • • What’s one good thing about “the storms of life”?
  • • Can you avoid “the storms of life”?
  • • What will happen if you don’t build your life on Jesus?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for being the Rock. Please help me to build my life on You by learning from You and obeying. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
