Does Jesus want us to be sad? In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught about eight people who seem like they are unfortunate, but they are actually blessed. These eight blessings are called the Beatitudes, and the second one says, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” We might often think that being sad is bad, and though sadness might feel bad, it can actually be very good. In fact, the shortest verse in the Bible says, “Jesus wept.” Being sad might be uncomfortable, but the way to find true comfort is not by running away from what’s uncomfortable, but by running towards God.

Bible Verses About Those Who Mourn:

  • Matthew 5:4 | “Blessed are those who mourn”
  • John 11:35 | “Jesus wept”
  • 2 Corinthians 1:3 | God comforts us so we can comfort others
  • 1 Peter 5:7 | God cares for you

Family Time Questions About Those Who Mourn:

• Is sadness a good feeling or a bad feeling?

• Is it OK to be sad? Or is it better to pretend like we’re OK?

• Why might it be important to be sad?

• Who can we run to for comfort when we are sad?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for always being there for me. Thank you for comforting me when I am sad. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
