When we talk about our “hearts” we’re often talking about our feelings and emotions. But when Jesus said to love God with all your heart, He was talking about much more than just your feelings. The Greek and Hebrew words for “heart” that we find in Scripture (specifically, in Mark 12:30 and Deuteronomy 6:5) can mean, “inner self.” There’s a whole world inside each one of us that no one sees but us and God. We’re not just supposed to love God with our actions, but also with everything that’s inside of us! Love the Lord your God with all your heart.
Bible Verses:
- Mark 12:30 | Love God with all your heart.
- Proverbs 4:23 | Guard your heart.
- Luke 6:45 | From the heart.
- Matthew 6:21 | Where your treasure is, your heart will be also.
- Jeremiah 17:10 | God searches the heart.
Family Time Questions:
- What do you think it means to love God with all your heart?
- How can we show God we love Him with our inner selves?
- Why do you think our heart, or inner self, is so important to God?
- Can you think of a time when you were just “going through the motions”?
Prayer:
“Dear God, teach us to love You with our whole hearts. Help us to understand what that truly means and to live it out every day. Thank you for seeing and knowing our inner selves and still loving us. We want our hearts to be completely Yours. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
