You’ve likely heard about the Holy Spirit, but… what is it? Actually, the question shouldn’t be, “What is the Holy Spirit?” but, “Who is the Holy Spirit?” The Holy Spirit is not a thing, He’s a person. He is God! He’s the third part of the Trinity (three persons, One God): God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
Some of the things that the Bible says about the Holy Spirit make Him seem like a “something” rather than a “Someone.” He’s described as a “gift” and a “seal” for example. But there are many verses that absolutely point to His personhood, like when it says not to grieve the Holy Spirit (You can’t grieve a thing!). And there are also verses that confirm that He is God, like when Ananias was told that he had lied to the Holy Spirit, and in doing so he had lied to God. When you believe in Jesus Christ you will have eternal life, and you will also receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. That means that the Holy Spirit will come and live inside you, you become God’s temple! If you are a Christian, the Holy Spirit is always with you.
Bible Verses:
- Acts 2:38 | When you believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to live in you.
- Acts 5:3-4 | The Holy Spirit is God
- Romans 8:26 | The Holy Spirit helps us to pray.
- Acts 1:8 | We receive power from the Holy Spirit.
- Galatians 5:22-23 | The Spirit helps us do what God has called us to.
- 1 Corinthians 6:19 | We Christians are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
- Ephesians 4:30 | We are cautioned not to grieve the Holy Spirit.
- Ephesians 1:13 | The Spirit is the seal of our salvation.
Family Time Questions:
• Why is it a better question to ask “who” the Holy Spirit is instead of “what” He is?
• Who is the Holy Spirit?
• Who has the Holy Spirit living in their hearts?
• How can you have the Holy Spirit in your heart?
Prayer:
Dear God, thank you for sending your Son, Jesus, to save me from my sins. And thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
