We see saints mentioned all the time. You might hear about them around holidays, like Saint Nicholas and Saint Patrick. Maybe you’ve seen a church or a city named after a saint, like Saint Louis or San Francisco (“San” means saint in Spanish). But what is a saint? A saint is someone who is holy and faithful to God. Christians may disagree on who counts as a saint, but it’s pretty much agreed that everyone in heaven is definitely in heaven or is definitely going to heaven, is a saint. Catholics and Orthodox Christians will sometimes “canonize” a Christian by saying that person is officially a saint (this happened for just about every saint you’ve ever heard of). If you believe in Jesus, you are called to be a saint. You are called to be holy and faithful to God. But we can only do that with the help of Jesus Christ. It is only through His sacrifice (not our own goodness) that we can be holy, and it is only with His help that we can be faithful to him. With God’s help, anyone can be holy and faithful to God. You are called to be a saint.
Bible Verses:
- 1 Corinthians 1:2-3 – Called to be saints
- Psalm 30:4 – Sing praises, saints!
- 2 Timothy 1:8-9 – God called us to a holy calling
- 1 Timothy 2:5 – Only one mediator between God and man
Family Time Questions:
- Why is Saint Patrick called “Saint Patrick”?
- What is a saint?
- What does it mean that we are called to be saints?
- How can we be holy and faithful to God?
Prayer:
“Dear God, thank You for Your holiness and faithfulness. Help us to answer the call to sainthood and be holy and faithful to you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
