On Palm Sunday we often say and hear the word “Hosanna”, but what does that actually mean? It’s much more than just a simple cheer like, “Hooray!” or “Woohoo!” the word Hosanna actually tells us something about who Jesus is and what He’s done for us.

“Hosanna” comes from two Hebrew words, “Yasha” and “Na.” “Yasha” (Which, in the original Hebrew, looks like this: יָשַׁע ) means something like “Save!” and “Na” ( נָא ) means something like, “Please!” But, “Hosanna” means much more than just, “Save please!” and that’s why the people who translated the Bible into other languages left it pretty much the way it is. “Hosanna!” is a shout of praise and joy! When the Israelites saw Jesus, on what we now call Palm Sunday, riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, they shouted “Hosanna!” because the Promised Savior (The Messiah) had finally come! They were hoping Jesus would save them from the Romans, but we shout “Hosanna!” knowing that Jesus came to save us from our sins!

Palm Sunday Bible Verses:

  • John 12:12-15 | On the first Palm Sunday, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.
  • Matthew 21:9 | The people shouted Hosanna!
  • Mark 11:9 | Hosanna (as in this verse) comes from the Hebrew “yasha” and “na.”
  • John 4:25-26 | Jesus is the Messiah!
  • Romans 6:23 | Jesus conquered sin and death.
  • Matthew 1:21 | He came to save us from our sins.

Palm Sunday Family Time Questions:

Can you give some examples of more-or-less nonsensical cheers?

What does “Hosanna” mean?

What does the cheer, “Hosanna!” tell us about Jesus?

Why did the Israelites shout “Hosanna”? and how is that different from why we shout “Hosanna”?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you so much for sending your son Jesus, the Messiah, to save us from our sins. Help us to honor you as our King and Savior.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Hosanna!
