Douglas has always wondered what God wants him to do when he grows up. He wants to be an astronaut but he’s not sure what God wants him to be. At school, they had an “aptitude test” which was supposed to tell you what you should be when you grow up. After taking the test his result was, “Cement worker in Australia.” Douglas doesn’t want to do that! So he decided to see if the Bible had any answers. He discovered that there’s nowhere in the Bible where it says, “Douglas should do this…” in fact, it never says Douglas’ name at all! But he did find a great verse that says that whatever you do, you should do it for God’s glory. That verse is talking specifically about what you eat, but it can apply to everything in our lives. Some people receive very clear callings from God, like Moses and the burning bush. But many of us don’t receive callings like that. So, “what does God want me to be when I grow up?” God wants you to be whatever you want to be, and to be that thing for His Glory. Just make sure that you don’t try to avoid a specific calling God has given you. Just ask Jonah, it doesn’t turn out very well! If you want to be a policeman, or an astronaut, or a pastor, or a teacher, or an accountant, or whatever you want to be, you can do it! Just make sure that whatever you do, do it to the glory of God.

“What Does God Want Me to Be?” Bible Verses:

  • 1 Corinthians 10:31 | Whatever You Do, Do it for God
  • 1 Timothy 2:1-4 | God Wants Everyone to Be Saved
  • Micah 6:8 | God Says What Is Good
  • Matthew 6:33 | Seek God First

“What Does God Want Me to Be?” Family Time Questions:

• What do you want to be when you grow up?

• How can you glorify God by being that thing?

• Is there a time to not just “be whatever you want to be”?

• What is the thing that God wants us all to be?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for your plan for me. Please help me to honor you with my life, no matter what I decide to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
