There is a story in the Bible where Jesus said that every sin can be forgiven except for blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. That’s a pretty big deal! But what does it actually mean to blaspheme the Holy Spirit? This is a question that Christians, and even non-Christians, have wrestled with for a long time because the Bible isn’t exactly clear on the subject. Some say that if you are worried that you have or will commit the unforgivable sin, then you haven’t and you won’t. Others say that the only unforgivable sin is to never believe in Jesus. It seems most likely that the answer is that blaspheming the Holy Spirit is seeing Jesus’ miracles, believing that those miracles are done through the power of the Holy Spirit, and then lying about it because you don’t like Jesus. If this interpretation is true, then it’s almost certain that you never have and never will commit the unforgivable sin, even if you tried on purpose.

Bible Verses:

  • Matthew 12:31-32, Mark 3:28-30, and Luke 12:10 – The unforgivable sin
  • John 5:24 – No judgment for believers
  • Romans 8:1 – No condemnation for those in Christ Jesus

Family Time Questions:

  • How many sins are unforgivable?
  • What is the only unforgivable sin?
  • What did the Pharisees say about the miracles they saw Jesus perform?
  • Why is it so hard (maybe even impossible) for us to do what they did?

Prayer:

“Dear God, thank You for sending us Your Son, Jesus. Please help us not to blaspheme You by any definition. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
