Fear can be a good thing, sometimes, but fear can also become an idol if we let it. It’s not always a sin to be afraid, but if you let your fear keep you from what God has called you to do, that’s wrong. If you believe in Jesus, you will have eternal life, and the Holy Spirit (that is, God Himself!) will come and live in your heart. And God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control. That’s what God wants for you. The spirit of fear is a spirit of weakness, and selfishness, and slavery. Choosing to serve God instead of fear is a very difficult choice, but with Jesus’ help, you can do it! Serve God, not fear.
Bible Verses:
- 2 Timothy 1:7 – God has not given us a spirit of fear
- Joshua 1:9 – Be strong and courageous
- Isaiah 41:10 – Find strength in God
- Philippians 4:6-7 – Be anxious for nothing
- Proverbs 22:3 – Fear can be wise, sometimes
Family Time Questions:
- When is it OK to be afraid?
- When is fear wrong?
- What does it mean that God has not given us a spirit of fear?
- How can we avoid making fear our idol?
Prayer:
“Dear God, thank You for always being there for us. Help us to serve and follow you, and not serve fear as our god. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
