Godly love is almost impossible to fake because it starts inside your heart. Pride might not be something that you do, it’s a feeling, but whatever’s in your heart will eventually come out. When we put ourselves above other people, all kinds of bad stuff will follow. Godly love is not proud.
Pride isn’t always wrong, it’s OK to be proud of your accomplishments, but pride becomes a serious problem when you start to view yourself as being better than other people. It’s never a good thing to think that other people aren’t as important as you. If you allow your heart to be filled with sinful pride, you will always start mistreating people. One day, Douglas and his little brother Stephen went outside to build snowmen. Douglas was excited to build his snowman and thought of himself as an artist with snow but he just thought of his brother as a “mess-around little kid” so Douglas didn’t think it would be a problem to step on Stephen’s smaller snowman. This really hurt Stephen’s feelings because he was just as excited about building snowmen as Douglas was and he loved his snowman just like Douglas loved his. There’s no commandment that says, “thou shalt not step on thy brother’s snowman.” But if Douglas had been loving his brother like he should have, instead of being proud, It never would have even come up! We should always think highly of others and never look at anyone as being “beneath” us. Godly love is not proud.
