God wants us to show kindness to everyone, even if they’re not kind to us. Douglas has a friend at school named Justin who only seems to be his friend during lunchtime, and only on certain days. Which was super confusing for Douglas until he realized that he only wanted to hang out with Douglas when Douglas had cookies in his lunchbox. So Justin would come over and be nice to Douglas so that Douglas would trade him one of his cookies. At first, when Douglas realized what was happening, he wanted to stop being friends with Justin because he wasn’t being a good friend. God wants us to be kind to everyone, even if they can’t pay us back. It’s not good to be friends with someone just to get something from them. But Douglas realized that if he was only friends with someone who would give him friendship in return, how was he any better than Justin? So Douglas decided to be Justin’s friend (even though Justin wasn’t a good friend back) because God wants us to show kindness to everyone, even if they can’t (or won’t) pay us back. God can help us to be kind.
