In Psalm 119, the psalmist (probably King David) says that he will keep God’s law continually. This seems like a pretty bold claim considering the fact that all of us, except for Jesus, have sinned and will sin again. We often think of God’s commands as including only a list of things to do and not do. “Do not sin” seems like a good summary of God’s Law, but that’s only part of the picture. God commands us not to sin, but He also tells us what to do when we do sin. We are commanded to confess our sins. So really, the only way to keep God’s Law continually is to admit that you don’t! God has made a way for us to be reconciled with Him. And, these days, it’s as simple as asking for forgiveness. David didn’t keep God’s Law continually by never sinning, he kept it by admitting His sin and asking God for forgiveness. Do not sin, but when you do, don’t pretend that you didn’t. Keep God’s Law and confess your sins to God.

Bible Verses:

  • Psalm 119:44 – Keep God’s Law continually
  • 1 John 1:8-10 – Confess your sins
  • Romans 6:14 – Not under Law
  • Acts 13:22 – A man after God’s own heart
  • John 14:15 – If you love God, obey Him

Family Time Questions:

  • Is there anyone who never sins?
  • How can we keep God’s commands even if we break them?
  • Is sin not a big deal?
  • Why do you think it’s so hard to confess our sins?

Prayer:

“Dear God, thank you for your love for us and for your sacrifice. Please help us to keep your commands continually by doing what is right and admitting when we do wrong. Help us to remember that we are not perfect and that we desperately need you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
