How bad does something have to be in order for it to be called a sin? Where is the line exactly? How far is too far? These are pretty common questions, but they can get you into real trouble! Instead of seeing how close we can get to sin, let’s see how close we can get to Jesus.
We all have a tendency to see how close we can get to the line without crossing it. But the truth is that even one step away from God is a sin. You can’t say, “Well, God says that I should not murder my neighbor. But it’s OK for me to just hate him, right?” Jesus said that hating your neighbor is like murdering him. Murdering someone may be worse than hating them in your mind, but they are both sin, they are both on the same path walking away from Jesus. Instead of focusing on seeing how far we can go without sinning, let’s focus on walking with Jesus. Also, though it can be incredibly difficult and scary, we should also help others to stay away from sin and encourage them to walk with Jesus. Staying close to God is always the safest place to be!
“How Far Is Too Far?” Bible Verses:

- Matthew 5:21-22 | Jesus said hate was like the sin of murder.

- James 4:8 | See how close you can get to God!
- Matthew 5:16 | Set a good example for your friends.
“How Far Is Too Far?” Family Time Questions:
- When does something count as a sin?
- How can we be saved if sinning is so easy?
- What should we do instead of seeing how close we can get to sin?
Prayer:
Dear God, thank you for your commandments. Please help me to always walk with you by your side. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
