Vending machines, cars, computers, idols, and many other things were all made by people to do whatever we want them to do. But God is not an idol, He wasn’t made by people. And our God is powerful and good, and He does answer prayers, but that doesn’t mean that He’s just going to do whatever we tell Him to do. We can trust that if what we ask in prayer is His will, He will make it happen; no matter what.

Unfortunately, many people look at God as a magical vending machine, which is how people have always viewed their false gods, but that’s no way to treat the One True God. Because He really is God, we don’t need to be worried that He didn’t hear us. God hears our prayers and He will answer them according to His will, not ours. God can’t be manipulated. Praying a prayer like, “God, if you give me a pony, I’ll never push my brother again!” is not a good idea. When you pray, expect that God will answer, and know that His answer is the right one.

“God Is Not an Idol” Bible Verses:

  • Isaiah 44:9-11 | Idols are worthless and made by man.
  • Genesis 1:27 | God created people Himself!
  • 1 Kings 18:20-40 | Elijah and the prophets of Baal.
  • Luke 11:9-10 | Jesus tells us to pray and seek God.
  • Psalm 112:6-7 | Trust in God.

“God Is Not an Idol” Family Time Questions:

  • What do you need to do in order for God to hear your prayers?
  • Why doesn’t God always answer our prayers the way we might expect?
  • What do we mean when we say that, “God is not an idol”?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for being the One True God and thank you for hearing my prayers. Help me to put my trust in you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
