When we “rate” the quality of someone’s faith (which is usually a pretty bad idea in the first place), we tend to look at the wrong things. We might look at their denomination, how often they go to church, how zealous they seem during worship, what sort of Christian education they have, how many followers they have, or even if they drive out demons. And we do the same thing with churches. We might look at how many people attend, how talented their pastor or worship team is, etc. And it’s not that these are bad things. They can be really important! But these can be done (or faked) by people and organizations that have no real connection to the Spirit of God; they are false fruit of the Spirit. We should look for the same qualities that God looks for. The real fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Bible Verses:

  • Matthew 7:17-23 – Known by their fruit
  • Galatians 5:22-23 – Fruit of the Spirit
  • 1 Samuel 16:7 – The Lord looks at the heart
  • Luke 16:15 – Exalted among men

Family Time Questions:

  • What are some things that might make you think someone has a strong faith, but can be faked? (False fruit of the Spirit)
  • What are some things that show a real and strong connection with God? (Real fruit of the Spirit)
  • What are some reasons why we should or shouldn’t try to “rate”  the quality of someone’s faith?

Prayer:

“Dear God, thank You for reaching out to us. Please help us walk with You and to look for the same qualities that You do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
