Some people say that you can’t trust the Bible because it’s just copies of copies. But, the fact that we don’t have any of the original biblical manuscripts doesn’t even come close to discrediting God’s word. Let’s talk about why you can totally trust the Bible, even though the manuscripts we have are just copies of copies.

Many people use the game of telephone (where you sit in a circle and whisper something into someone’s ear, then they whisper what they think they heard to the person sitting next to them and so on) as an analogy to “prove” that the Bible we have today is nowhere near what it was when it was written thousands of years ago. That might seem like a good argument at first, but it’s really not. The game of telephone is specifically designed to mess you up, but there is every reason to believe that the people who copied the original biblical manuscripts had the skill, patience, and motivation to copy exactly what was written in the originals.

Bible Verses:

  • 2 Timothy 3:16 | The Bible is God’s Word.
  • Psalm 12:6 | God’s words are flawless.
  • Psalm 119:160 and John 17:17 | All God’s words are true.
  • Hebrews 11:1 | Belief always has an element of faith.
  • 1 Peter 3:15 | Be ready to gently share the reasons for your hope in Jesus.

Family Time Questions:

• Why do some people want to believe that the Bible is not really God’s word?

• Why is the game of telephone a terrible analogy for how Scripture was copied?

• What are some reasons that we can be confident that the original biblical manuscripts were copied accurately?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for giving us the Bible. Help me to be kind and loving to those who don’t want to believe your word, and please help me to also stand firm in the truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
