Many people say that since the Bible is “full of contradictions” it clearly can’t be the Inspired Word of God. But does the Bible really contradict itself? And, if there are Biblical contradictions, can we really trust the Bible?
The argument goes, that if the Bible contradicts itself, it proves that the authors of Scripture either disagreed with or didn’t know/forgot what the other authors of Scripture wrote, which means that the Bible can’t be inspired by one Author, God. But, if you look at Scripture as a whole, instead of just taking bits and pieces, the Bible rarely contradicts itself. And, sometimes, when it does seem to contradict itself it actually proves that the “contradictions” argument doesn’t make sense! In Proverbs 26, verses 4 and 5 offer two contradicting pieces of advice, and these verses were clearly written by the same author. Contradictions don’t prove that the Bible is untrue, they just prove that life is complicated!
Bible Verses:
- 2 Timothy 3:16 | The Bible is written by God.
- Acts 17:11 | Study God’s Word deeply.
- John 17:17 | His Word is true!
- Proverbs 3:5-6 | You can trust God.
Family Time Questions:
• What’s a contradiction?
• Why is it important to read the Bible as a whole, instead of just bits and pieces?
• If a Biblical contradiction means that different authors either disagreed with or didn’t know what other biblical authors wrote, how can you explain Proverbs 26 verses 4-5 (Trick question! You can’t.)
Prayer:
Dear God, thank you for giving us the Bible. Please help me to always be learning and to stand firm in the Truth found in Scripture. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
