Baptism is a Christian ceremony where water is used as a physical symbol of spiritual purification, rebirth, and initiation into God’s family. Scripture is clear that baptism is incredibly important and it’s a pretty controversial topic among Christians. Christians argue about who should be baptized (infants or believers), why you should be baptized (salvation or obedience), and how you should be baptized (immersion or sprinkling). Jesus instructed His disciples to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Let’s do our best to honor God in how we learn about, teach, discuss, and practice baptism.

Bible Verses:

  • Matthew 28:19-20 – Baptism is important.
  • Acts 2:36-38 – Example of baptism before receiving the Holy Spirit.
  • Acts 10:42-48 – Example of baptism after receiving the Holy Spirit
  • Romans 6:3-4 – Baptism symbolizes death and resurrection with Christ.
  • 1 Peter 3:21-22 – Baptism saves through the resurrection of Jesus.
  • Galatians 3:27-29 – Baptism connected to covenant with Abraham

Family Time Questions:

  • What is baptism?
  • Why is baptism important?
  • What are the different views on who should be baptized and how?
  • How does baptism symbolize purification, rebirth, and initiation?

Prayer:

“Dear God, thank You for giving us baptism as a sign of our faith and entrance into Your family. Guide us in understanding and appreciating this practice. Help us to honor Your will in how we learn about, teach, and carry out baptism, recognizing its significance in our lives as followers of Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
