It’s really important to have good friends. We need people in our life to help build us up and help us in our walk with Jesus. We should have good friends but we should also BE a good friend, even to people who aren’t that great of a friend for us. God wants us to have a positive influence on people, but He doesn’t want us to let them have a negative influence on us. Jesus was friends with “sinners”, but he never let their sin become his sin. We need to be incredibly careful. It’s a lot easier to be pulled down than it is to pull people up. If you’re not being diligent about the ways you allow your thoughts and behaviors, bad company will corrupt good character. If you have bad friends, you might need new friends.
Bible Verses:
- 1 Corinthians 15:33 | Bad company corrupts good character.
- Proverbs 27:17 | Friends sharpen each other.
- Proverbs 13:20 | Wise friends make you wise.
- Proverbs 22:24-25 | Avoid bad-tempered friends.
- John 15:15 | Jesus calls us His friends.
Family Time Questions:
- What makes a good friend?
- How can friends lead us into doing wrong things?
- How can we be a good friend to others?
- What should we do if a friend is a bad influence?
- How does Jesus show us how to be a good friend?
Prayer:
“Dear God, thank You for the gift of friendship. Please help us choose friends who will lead us closer to You. Give us strength to be a good influence on others, and wisdom to know when a friendship is leading us into sin. Help us to be good friends, like Jesus is to us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
