Ash Wednesday (which happens on the first day of Lent, the 40 days of fasting leading up to Easter) is a traditional day of prayer, fasting, and repentance observed by Christians around the world. On this day, Christians will have their foreheads marked with ashes as a symbol of mourning because of their sin. Jesus’ sacrifice for us is cause for both joy and sadness. We’re happy that Jesus has saved us from our sins, but very sad about how and why He had to do it. Godly grief over our sin leads us to repentance.

Bible Verses:

  • 2 Corinthians 7:10 – A Good Kind of Grief
  • 2 Chronicles 7:14 – Turn From Your Wicked Ways
  • James 4:8-10 – Humble Mourning for Sin
  • Matthew 5:4 – Blessed Are Those Who Mourn

Family Time Questions:

  • What makes Easter so happy?
  • What makes Easter so sad?
  • What’s the difference between worldly grief and godly grief?
  • How often should we repent?

Prayer:

“Dear God, thank you for your incredible love for us. We are so glad that you have saved us and very sad about what you had to go through to do it. Please help us to repent of our sins and follow you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
