Self-control never happens by accident. Our first choice is very rarely a good idea. Left to our own devices, we make selfish and foolish choices. If we want to serve God well and be effective and fruitful in this life, we need to control ourselves and follow God’s ways. Our behavior does not get us into heaven; only Jesus can do that for us. When we believe in Him, we will have eternal life. But we cannot just do things our own way and expect them to turn out alright. Only God’s way works, and it takes effort to walk with Him. We need to make every effort to add to our faith self-control.
Bible Verses:
- 2 Peter 1:3-11 – Add to your faith
- 1 Corinthians 9:25 – Imperishable rewards
- Proverbs 21:23 – Control your words
- 1 Timothy 1:7 – God gave us a Spirit of self-control
Family Time Questions:
- Does your good behavior get you into heaven?
- What happens when we have no self-control?
- What happens when we have good self-control?
- What should we do when we mess up?
Prayer:
“Dear God, thank You for showing us the way. Please help us to add self-control to our faith and live as You have called us to live. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
