If something is an abomination, that means it’s a hateful, very bad thing. If we say that we hate something, that doesn’t really mean a whole lot. If Douglas says that he hates eggplant, that doesn’t mean that eggplants are actually bad, he just doesn’t like them. Douglas is just Douglas and you are just you. But if God hates something, that is an incredibly big deal. Our preferences don’t define right and wrong, but God’s do. For Christians, there really should be no debate, if God says that something is an abomination, that thing is not a good thing. Some of the sins that God calls an abomination are things that many of us don’t struggle with, but that is not at all an excuse to start mistreating people because of their sin. We need to work on our own sinfulness instead of attacking others for theirs. Most of what the Bible calls abominable are sins that we all struggle with. Let’s do our best to align our lives to what God says is good and put behind us what God says is bad.
Bible Verses:
- Proverbs 6:16-19 – Seven things God hates
- Matthew 7:3-5 – Deal with your own sin
- Romans 2:1 – We are no better than anyone else
- Numbers 23:19 – God doesn’t change His mind
Family Time Questions:
- If you do what God hates, does God hate you?
- How has God proven that He loves you and doesn’t hate you?
- Can something be good if God hates it?
- Why should we listen to what God says?
Prayer:
“Dear God, thank You for Your love for us. Please help us to align our lives to what you say is good and flee from what you say is bad. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
